Yesterday (27/8) UTHM Malaysia and ITERA have Webinar “Sustainable Remediation Using Low Cost Materials in Permeable Reactive Barrier System” with Dr. Ziyad Abunada as Guest Speaker from Central Queensland University, Australia and Coastal Marine Ecosystem Research Center (CMERC).
Dr Abunada said on this talk that PRB or Permeable Reactive Barrier system actually is one of the passive methods to treat contaminated groundwater. So contaminated water will be clean up underground.
“Groundwater is not pumped above the ground and the soil is not transported for treatment and disposal. The main materials for PRB are nano chitosan, activated carbon, chemical, soil and chitosan, etc.” He said.
He added, The reactive material in PRBs is not harmful to groundwater or people. Because some contaminated soil may be encountered when digging the trench, workers are wearing protective clothing. It tested regularly to make sure the PRB is working.
